On Sunday February 16 Lisette will lead the chapter meeting in readings of Giovanni Priuli’s “Canzone a 7”, Sören Sieg’s “kinyongo” (from his African Suite #4), and Glen Shannon’s “Friendship Canzona” which we will perform at our Spring Concert in May.

Happy new year everybody! We closed out the new year with a very successful holiday concert. About sixty people in the audience. We also enjoyed a performance the recorder club from the Roosevelt Middle School in River Forest led by Mona Mann.
Our next meeting will be January 19th. Lisette Kielson returns in January to lead us in music by William Byrd, the six-part “Christ Rising Again” and our own Peter Beck’s four-part arrangement of the English ballad “Willy O’Winsbury.” And we plan to continue work on our spring concert selection, Glen Shannon’s “Friendship Canzona” as well as the “Abendlied” piece for the Folk Music Festival in February.

Our annual Yuletide Concert for the Chicago Chapter is coming up, Sunday December 15 
at 2 PM. Send the name of your group, the names of the participants, the names of the pieces you plan to play, and the composers, to Larry Johnson at ll_johnson1239@sbcglobal.net.
Note that the Chicago Recorder Quartet is planning to perform! Feel free to bring some snacks to share, and plan to stay after the concert and holiday festivities to join in some jamming to close the season together.

For the November Meeting, Lisette continues her “Molto Espressivo” theme and leads the group in works by among others, Henry Purcell and Ludwig Senfl, as well as Glen Shannon’s Friendship Canzona. Also, we will rehearse a selection from September’s or November’s meeting for the Yuletide concert. There was talk of playing the Rheinberg piece as a chapter. It is time to think about what you would like to play for December 15

Join us on October 20th, when Gail Gillespie brings a program of music by the “Lost Generation” of early Renaissance composers, between Josquin and the era of Lassus and Palestrina. Gail will lead us in exploring pieces by Gombert, Clemens, and Willaert, plus early madrigals.

For our 61st season, 2019-2020, Lisette Kielson returns for her sixth year as our music director. She plans to devote her five chapter meetings to the comprehensive theme “Molto Espressivo!”
What makes for a musical performance? For expressive playing? Is there always something more to say, or a better way to say it? Whether presented with soaring melodies, clashing dissonances, or intricate rhythms, we will consider our technical (and musical!) approach and address tone, articulation, breathing, musical weight, and more in order to capture the essence of the composer’s expressive vision.

Greetings from the ARS President and Board!
Welcome to the Chicago chapter’s 2019-2020 season! After the deadly summer heat this year, I’m sure we’re all looking forward to some really ‘cool’ playing sessions. Lisette Kielson will again be our director for five sessions, with the other two featuring the ever-popular ‘TBA’. Also, don’t forget about our concerts in December and May. We encourage all who will to perform, in solo or in consort, so start searching for that perfect piece to share. Our concerts have proved to be very enjoyable, so please remember to invite your family and friends! As always, feel free to invite all of your recorder-playing friends to attend our monthly meetings. Especially in music, it’s really “the more the merrier”!
