  • 2024-25 Season Review

    2024-25 Season Review

It’s been a busy 2024-25 season for the Chicago Recorder Society. In addition to our regular monthly sessions, we sponsored a day of Recorders and Renaissance Wind Music with Liza Malmut, presented a participatory workshop at the University of Chicago’s Folk Fest, and played for worship services at two churches!

We’d like to give much appreciation to the volunteers who helped make it happen, our music director Lisette Kielson, and everyone who joined us to play recorders together.

We’re working on next year’s program. Make sure our dates (below) are on your calendar, and here’s looking forward to another year of happy music making.

Make plans to join us for our final meeting of the 2024-2025 season, our Spring Concert on May 18 at 1 PM. All are invited to perform, or just listen and enjoy, and all types of music are welcome. If you would like to play in the program, send the names of the performers, the title of the pieces you plan to play, and the name of the composer or composers, to Mark Dawson, msjddawson@sbcglobal.net. (Participants are asked to keep their performances to 5 minutes or less.)

  • Welcome Spring with music at our April 13 meeting!

Welcome Spring with music at our April 13 meeting!

We’ll start at 2 PM with Renaissance Redux and more music from the Odhecaton, led by Nancy Chabala.

At 3 PM, for our final chapter meeting before the Spring Concert, Lisette leads us in our dress rehearsal of Lachrimae Tango. In addition to rehearsing this double-choir performance selection, we will stay in England and read through Purcell’s Funeral Sentences in honor of Queen Mary, John Adson’s vibrant Royal Wind Music. Peter Beck will then spend a few minutes preparing us to perform jazz piece Now’s the Time in May.

For our April 13 meeting, all the music will be available here. See our latest newsletter here.

  • We invite you to our (Almost-St.-Patrick’s-Day) musical experience on Mar. 16!

Join us on March 16 as we enter another dimension … not only of sight and sound, but of mind … no, not the Twilight Zone — recorder jazz!

We’ll start at 2 PM with an hour of Renaissance music by Nancy Chabala.

Then from 3 to 5, we’ll take our familiar recorders and teach them some jazz tricks. We’ll take a crack at some familiar tunes — “Ja-Da” and “St. James Infirmary” — and then see how hip we can sound on some bebop, and even a bit of funky stuff a la Ray Charles. Before you know it, you’ll be riffing, dragging, swinging, and falling off!

Please join us in a lively afternoon of rollicking rhythm and mellifluent melody!

For our March 16 meeting, all the music will be available here. See our latest newsletter here.

First, we will reprise the Pezel dances during our participatory workshop at upcoming University of Chicago Folk Music Festival on Feb 8th. Second, Lisette will rehearse us in the fun double choir Lachrimae Tango (from September) which we will perform at our community concert and social in May. But that’s not all – the January meeting will also include sight-reading, exploring Tallis’ beautiful O Sacrum Convivium and more!
